This Month: Cleaning Up Your Online Image

This month's experts are the founders of Her Campus, Stephanie Kaplan, Windsor Hanger, and Annie Wang. Together, they have been named to BusinessWeek's 25 Under 25 Best Young Entrepreneurs and Inc. magazine's 30 Under 30 Coolest Young Entrepreneurs, so they know how to blend professional and party. Here is their advice on how to balance your social life on campus and your social media and image online:

  • Create a one-sentence personal statement that explains your goals, ambitions, and skills. (Try and keep it to 140 characters or less!) These statements are not only great for your online profiles, but also for your interviews. Keep this statement consistent across all of your profiles and websites.
  • Knowing how to use Twitter is a great skill to have for your next job, but edit your own feed for typos, swears, and any other inappropriate tweets. You can also have two accounts: one for professional use and one for personal use. Just make sure your personal one is protected, and consider not including your full name.
  • Go through your Facebook albums, tagged photos of you, your info page, and your wall. Those “favorite quotes” from all your drunk friends? Probably not something you want an employer to see. In addition, check your photos for anything inappropriate and remove them – especially your profile pictures. Never have a profile photo where alcohol is visible. On your wall, be sure to remove anything you may have said related to a past job or employer. You know better than to post it now, but you may not have a few years ago.
  • Google yourself. If you can find it, chances are your potential boss can too. Look through the search results and be certain there aren’t any embarrassing photos, blog posts, or comments that would make a poor impression.
  • If you have a blog or personal website (a tumblr, for instance), go through it for inappropriate posts, typos, and anything that might be used against you in an interview. Just as you shouldn’t speak poorly about former employers or jobs on Facebook, you should also make sure your blog and/or website doesn’t have any hate posts. Whether or not you submit these links on an application, a simple Google search of your name will yield these pages.
So, whether you’re a current student or recent grad, these tips on cleaning up your online identity are crucial. Not only will it make you Google-search ready, but it will also rid your profiles of many embarrassing moments you had long forgotten about – especially now that Facebook timeline has made them so easy to reappear! Take the time to check your profiles and you will never give employers a reason to say no again – at least when it comes to your online identity.
